Default Ranger PvP Help

Ok, so it's come to this.

Basically, I've been playing Guild Wars since release. Finished Prophecies, most of Factions, part-way through GWEN and haven't got Nightfall (I'm not exactly hardcore).

However, I now want to turn my eyes towards PvP and see if I can have some fun with it.

When I first played Prophecies, I remember trying PvP in the Ascalon Arena at the start, and not enjoying it - and even when I finished Proph, I gave it another go and still didn't like it - not because I thought it was bad, or that it wasn't fun - basically I could never consistently win. That isn't to say I never won, moreover, when I won or when I lost, I was never convinced that it was because of anything particular that I personally did.

A while back I tried Factions Alliance Battles, and as I was a more experienced player, I did find that whether I played well or poorly seemed to influence the outcome - a little - but still, I didn't really think I was doing too much to help.

So, my character is a Ra/Rit, and I'm wondering - how do you play PvP?? Although builds would be welcome, I doubt as a PvE player I'll have most of the skills I would need - for now I just want general advice.

Rangers are one of the hardest characters to kill because of crazy defensive stances like [skill]Escape[/skill].

Rangers are a jack-of-all-trades profession through interruption, pressure damage, flag-running, snare tactics, mass degen, and survivability.

There is no real niche. As a ranger, you can fulfill many utlility roles in a single skill bar.

A typical cripshot bar is

[skill]Crippling Shot[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Since ur a Rit secondary, you can switch out [skill]Mending Touch[/skill] with [skill]Antidote Signet[/skill]

With this skill bar alone, you can run flags, interrupt pivotal skills, snare enemies, & spread pressure damage, all while being one of the hardest things to pin down cuz of condition removal and a defensive stance.

Though the majority of rangers in PvP use the Cripshot build, you can make a limitless number of effective builds. I like...

[skill]Magebane Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Screaming Shot[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Antidote Signet[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Rangers are one of the most versatile and powerful professions in PvP. Alls u need is more practice and you'll have a great time.

HF rangering!

The most effective roles a Ranger can play in PvP include interrupting and spreading conditions. Without Nightfall, you can probably still pull off a relatively standard Crippling Shot build:

[skill]Crippling Shot[/skill][skill]Hunter's Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Mend Condition[/skill][skill]Zojun's Haste[/skill]
Edit: Heh, Horseradish beat me to it. Though he seems to have missed the part where the OP said he didn't have Nightfall.

Use Zojun's Haste in Alliance Battles, replace it with a Res Signet in other forms of PvP. Also, make sure you use a Recurve bow. Monsters don't know how to dodge a Longbow shot--players do.

Don't worry too much about "winning consistently." You will still lose sometimes no matter how much experience you have, no matter how good you are.

Right, I'll need to get crippling shot then. I also want to get Melandru's Arrows, as I don't have either.

hehe. oops. Forgot you don't have Nightfall.

[skill]Escape[/skill][skill]Debilitating Shot[/skill] or [skill]Hunter's Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Antidote Signet[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Oh. Recurve Bow ftw.

That is all.

[skill]Glass Arrows[/skill][skill]Dual Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Concussion Shot[/skill][skill]Needling Shot[/skill][skill]Conjure Frost[/skill][skill]Lightning Reflexes[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

This also works as a higher damage spiker/interrupter. Get a stinky high level of expertise, and put as many points you can spare into water magic (bout 8 is good). Be careful on how you use Concussion shot as without access to better E-management it will run you dry even at very high expertise. Of course adjust conjure/interupts to suit yourself and have fun.

[skill]Burning Arrow[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

[skill]Crippling Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Expertise --> 12+1+1
Wilderness Survival --> 9+1
Marksmanship --> 9+1

[skill]Magebane Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Expertise --> 12+1+1
Wilderness Survival --> 9+1
Marksmanship --> 9+1

Do you see the similarities between these builds... Ya! These builds truely are the best Ranger PvP Builds.

Some fun ranger builds that don't actually use bows:

[skill]Vampiric Touch[/skill][skill]Vampiric Bite[/skill][skill]Offering of Blood[/skill][skill]Throw Dirt[/skill][skill]Whirling Defense[/skill][skill]Dodge[/skill][skill]Zojun's Haste[/skill][skill]Plague Touch[/skill]

Expertise --> 12+1+3
Blood Magic --> 12

[skill]Hammer Bash[/skill][skill]Crushing Blow[/skill][skill]Irresistible Blow[/skill][skill]Bestial Mauling[/skill][skill]Rampage as One[/skill][skill]Comfort Animal[/skill][skill]Charm Animal[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

[skill]Barbed Spear[/skill][skill]Blazing Spear[/skill][skill]Merciless Spear[/skill][skill]Heal as One[/skill][skill]Tiger's Fury[/skill][skill]Poisonous Bite[/skill][skill]Charm Animal[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

DONT DO IT!!
1. Touching is just an easy way to get balth faction, not actual pvp playing
2. Thumpers and w/e the spear one is called, are not actual rangers. They are warriors and paras with higher amounts of energy.

So what im really saying is that they are not real rangers, JUST DONT DO IT!!

On the matter itself, try being a beastmaster.
Don't have a build myself. Just take some condition skills from beast mastery side, like poisonous bite(dont know if that is spelled right), Ferel lunge and compliment them with some bow skills, inturupts, traps, yada yada.
I know that traps are not bow skills...

A Ranger IS expertise, any build which takes advantage of this primary attribute is a Ranger. Because you don't want to play around, don't hinder anyone else. I get FAR more whacky than these builds...

Oops. Well, I'd never carry Mend Condition personally anyway, I have access to Mending Touch. That's just the non-Nightfall condition removal skill that popped into my head first.

I love Thumper can be very useful against those pesky Monks...

only downside about a thumper it needs a healer, since they dont have no defensive stance or healing skils on there bar...

sometimes I bring [skill]Lightning Reflexes[/skill] just in case I dont get a healer in RA...

to the Majiger:

They give secondaries in Guild Wars for a reason. R/Me with BHA/Epidemic, R/N touchie, R/Rt SW/Warmonger's, R/E conjure weapon, and R/Mo for healing skills. A ranger is the closest thing to a Jack-of-all-trades GW has. It uses a lot of secondaries well. Are you saying a ranger, a hunter and tracker in the wild, wouldn't use a spear? I would think they would use the best weapon in any situation.

Pretty sure any build using the primary attribute of Expertise is a Ranger so... /fail

Just because they're gimmicky badness doesn't mean they aren't fun.

Rangers are very flexible, and trapping can be quite viable in PvP with the right group. I've had a fair bit of fun with this build in TA (sometimes swapping natural stride out for Nature's Renewal):

[skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Smoke Trap[/skill][skill]Barbed Trap[/skill][skill]Dust Trap[/skill][skill]Flame Trap[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Whirling defense[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]
